Ethan

It was still dark outside when I woke up the morning of the mission. We’d managed to get the location of the drug trafficker’s base the evening before from a teenaged kid named Marcus who had agreed to talk to us in exchange for a deal for leniency. After we’d gotten the information we needed, Officer Walker and I had come up with a plan to hit the base early in the morning, which was when most of the men were bound to be there. It would be riskier that way, but we’d be able to make a larger arrest.

I reached across the bed toward the nightstand where my phone was charging. It was a little after five in the morning, a whole hour before the time I’d set my alarm for. There was no point in trying to go back to sleep, though. My mind was already far too active going over the details of the mission for that to happen.

I didn’t really want to get out of bed. Tessa’s head was nestled on my shoulder, and one of her arms was draped loosely over my chest. Outside, I could hear the waves of the ocean as they softly crashed against the shore. I felt immensely comfortable, and part of me really did want to close my eyes and just let myself drift off again.

“Ethan?” Tessa’s sleepy voice broke through the silence. “Are you okay?”

I turned to peer down at her. It was too dark for me to see her face clearly, but I could tell that she was looking back at me.

“Sorry,” I replied. “Did I wake you up?”

“Not really,” she yawned. “I don’t know. I just kind of woke up, and I could tell you were awake too. What time is it?”

“Early,” I replied. “It’s still dark. You should go back to sleep.”

“Why aren’t you asleep then?” she countered.

“Can’t,” I replied simply. “Too awake already.”

“Then I’ll get up too,” she replied as she slowly sat up and stretched.

“You don’t have to,” I replied, though I was secretly glad. While I felt a bit selfish, the idea of having her company was more appealing than just waiting around for an hour by myself.

“I know.” She smiled at me. “But I’m going to, anyway. If you can’t sleep, it means you’re nervous about the mission, right? What kind of person would I be if I just ignored you and went to sleep knowing that?”

“I wouldn’t call it ‘nervous,’” I replied as I sat up. “Excited is probably a better word.”

“Excited?” She giggled. “Excited about marching into a house full of drug traffickers?”

“Adventure’s in my blood,” I replied with a grin.

“Adrenaline junkie.” She rolled her eyes. My vision had adjusted enough to the darkness so I could see the way she was smiling at me. “Anyway, since we’re up, why don’t we have some breakfast before we head out?”

“We?” I repeated incredulously. “What do you mean before ‘we’ head out?”

“What part of that was unclear to you?” Tessa replied. “You
